EDF: to fix climate crisis, America must “become global leader again”

July 30, 2019

100% clean economy both “achievable and necessary”

The climate clock is ticking, and the need to transition to a 100% clean economy has never been so urgent. That’s the premise of an article published last week by the Environmental Defense Fund’s Senior VP of Political Affairs, Elizabeth Gore.

Echoing some of the forward-thinking language of senator Ed Markey (D-MA) and congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) Green New Deal, Gore emphasized the economic upside of a 100% clean economy. In addition to the millions of jobs such initiatives create, there is soft power that attends global leadership in the technologies—such as PV and decarbonization—that are now so crucial to our collective future.

“We need to join this global race, and develop the solutions that will put us ahead of our competitors in the area of innovation and invention,” Gore said.

While Markey and Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal was essentially without legs from the start, becoming a partisan litmus test and punching bag for right wing pundits, Gore hopes to mobilize what she calls “bipartisan support in Congress for new investments in clean energy”.

The track record of success, Gore said, speaks for itself: “previous investments in and incentives for renewable power are paying off and the cost of existing clean energy sources has plummeted. Solar energy prices have dropped nearly 90% in the last decade and wind power is almost 70% cheaper.”

Indeed, with the cost of solar and other carbon-neutral energies falling precipitously in recent years, there is now a need for a clean energy marketplace in which to trade that energy between peers. That’s why Power2Peer developed P2PConnect, an easy-to-use mobile app that will allow millions of users to buy and sell clean kilowatts with their neighbors.

By making better use of the renewable resources that are now indispensable to the fight against climate change, P2PConnect will not only shrink our carbon footprint, but help consumers save money on their electricity bills in the process.

Traditionally, consumers’ access to clean energy has been largely contingent upon the means to install solar panels or wind turbines themselves. P2PConnect is breaking down those barriers to entry so that all who wish to power their lives with carbon-free energy will now have the ability to do so.
